Marathon Finish

Running Accomplishments:

My first 5k was August 23, 2014. I placed third but failed to write down my finishing time.

My personal bests:

5k - 28:52

6k - 36:17

10k - 1:05:8

Half marathon (trail run) my only half so far - 3:08:06. I think I was down more than I was up, lol.

Short-Term Running Goals:

My short term running goal is to run another half marathon this coming September. I had a long bout of vertigo that caused me to miss 3 halfs in January and February of this year. I am still trying to work my distance runs back up to 14 miles. It's been more difficult than before the vertigo.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I am in the process of training for my first marathon. Once I get to that point, I will start working on my speed because my ultimate goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon and run it with my daughter, Tiffany.

Personal:

I began running in 2013, but my story began in January of 2012. My granddaughter, Ariana, had just turned 5. She got real sick, was hospitalized, and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I was totally devastated because being a nurse, I knew what a rough road was a head of her. After a year of watching Ariana and my daughter, Tiffany, struggle with this very strict, unforgiving disease I realized that I needed a way to vent/cope. That's when I laced up my running shoes for the first time in years and headed out to run. I found running to be a tremendous help. When I would get tired, sore, etc. and thought about giving up I would think about Ariana who did not have a choice. If she could endure this disease, I could endure whatever running threw at me, and I would push myself harder. Running was the therapy I needed. In August of 2014 I ran my first 5k. Halfway through the race I thought, "What the heck was I thinking?" I crossed the finish line feeling exhausted, sick to my stomach and headed straight to the porta potty. I began feeling a sense of accomplichment I have never felt before. I placed third and was totally stoked. Thus, my love for competitive running began.

Very hot out, but thanks to the rain it cooled off a little. I didn't have to run in 90+ weather today. So happy to finally hit 5 miles again. It's been real tuff working my distance back up since my lengthly bout with vertigo. I was going to hit 5 miles today whether I was running or walking, I did both, lol. It was slower than my 10k pace used to be, but I'm on my way back. Yay!

A wonderful run this evening. The temp dropped to 75. Way wow! It is usually in the 90s when I run, with the sun beating down on me. I ran a trail run in a misty kind of rain, feet sloshing in my shoes, grass and dirt sticking to my lower legs, but it was awesome all the same. I will take the rain over the sun any run, lol. I feel great!!

Welcome to the FRB! Good to see some other southerners on here. Looks like you've got a neat story of your running background.

Woohoo! 13.2 miles in this morning. I had a few technical difficulties. Got out at 7 to try and beat the heat. I forgot that since my track is mostly grass that it would be wet. So, before the half mile point my shoes were full of water and my feet were soaking in it. Well, by mile 8 my feet were hurting so I took my socks and shoes off and ran the rest barefoot. All I can say is where there's a will there's a way. Score!!!

What about it is different than you were doing before, and working so well?

I was trying very hard to get back to my distance running after a month long bout with vertigo. I just couldn't do it. I was really struggling and very discouraged. The book explains all the ins and outs as to why they structure the running training program the way they do. It makes a lot of sense. The program has easy, speed, tempo, and long runs put into a 6 days a week training plan. Every aspect of distance running is covered. You can go onto Amazons website to pull up the book. Then you can read pages from the book so you can see what it's all about. I am back to where I was before the vertigo hit and improving everyday. Thank you.
